Aloy Ejimakor, a consultant to the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, arrived in Sokoto to visit him at the correctional centre where he is currently serving a life sentence.
Ejimakor disclosed his arrival on Wednesday in a Facebook post, accompanied by Kanu’s brother, Emmanuel Kanu, and his wife, as he shared a photograph of the trio taken in Sokoto.
Ejimakor, reiterating his call for collective action, urged the Igbo people to stay committed to efforts to secure Kanu’s release.
The photo caption accompanying his post read, “I just arrived Sokoto (with Prince Emmanuel Kanu and his wife) to have a visitation with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Ndigbo must vigorously rise to the urgent task of freeing #MNK from this ordeal and injustice that reflects on all of us.”
The Sokoto visit comes barely 48 hours after the South-East Caucus in the House of Representatives formally wrote to President Bola Tinubu seeking a presidential pardon for the incarcerated IPOB leader.
Kanu was convicted on November 20 by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, on seven counts of terrorism.
The charges were linked to his secessionist campaigns aimed at disintegrating the South-East, the South-South and parts of the Middle Belt from Nigeria.
Kanu was first arrested in 2015 and arraigned on 15 counts bordering on treasonable felony, terrorism, criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an unlawful organisation, among other offences. Kaduna Refinery
He was granted bail in 2017 on health grounds but fled to the United Kingdom after a military operation at his family home in Abia State.
He was later arrested abroad and extradited to Nigeria from Kenya after diplomatic coordination in 2021.
Throughout the terrorism trial, he remained in the custody of the Department of State Services until his conviction last week, before being transferred to the Sokoto correctional facility, where he was moved after sentencing.
