Nigerian gospel artist Tim Godfrey has opened up about the harsh realities faced by gospel musicians in Nigeria, sharing that he once received bars of yam and a live chicken as payment for his shows.
In a video that went viral on Thursday, Godfrey voiced his frustration over the undervaluation of gospel singers by event organizers and audiences. He explained that returning to Nigeria for performances has become challenging due to the poor treatment and lack of financial recognition for their work.
He stated, “Coming back to Nigeria has become difficult because of how badly artists are treated. I’m tired of hearing complaints like ‘why are they charging?’ or ‘why are they collecting money?’ I’ve received two bars of yam as payment before. I’ve also been paid with a live, breathing chicken. How am I supposed to pay school fees, rent, or invest with that? It’s completely unfair.”
The singer’s candid comments sparked widespread online support, with many Nigerians agreeing that gospel musicians deserve greater respect and fair compensation.
Originally from Kaduna State, Tim Godfrey started his music career in the early 2000s and formed the group Tim Godfrey and the Xtreme Crew in 2004. Their hit track “Na You Be God” propelled him into the spotlight, establishing him as one of Nigeria’s leading contemporary gospel artists.
Over the years, he has released numerous popular songs and collaborated with international gospel stars, including Travis Greene on the global hit “Nara.” Godfrey continues to champion gospel music worldwide, skillfully merging traditional sounds with modern Afrobeats.
