No security patch included in the first Google TV Streamer update

Google TV Streamer AH 1

Google has released the first-ever update for the Google TV streamer device. The concerningly small update doesn’t even include the latest security patch.

Google TV streamer gets its first update a month after release

The Google TV Streamer is one of the most capable and feature-rich streaming boxes. Google launched the Google TV Streamer in September, and now, the company has released an update for the same.

The Google TV Streamer is significantly better than the Chromecast dongle it succeeds and challenges the NVIDIA SHIELD TV. The new form factor ensures ample space for full-sized ports and components, such as an Ethernet, a USB-C, and even a Thread radio to control Matter-based smart home ecosystems.

Google claims its Android TV box is 22% more powerful than the Chromecast with Google TV (4K). It packs 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. There’s native support for Dolby Atmos. The new remote, although similar to the old one, includes a customizable button. Additionally, there’s a handy “Find My Remote” feature that users can trigger with a button on the set-top box.

With such promising hardware and features, the Google TV Streamer could soon become a hot seller. As Google is selling the streaming box, buyers can expect regular updates. While Google released an update a month after the Android TV box launched, it might not be what the buyers were expecting.

What does the first update for the Google TV box contain?

At the time of its launch, the Google TV Streamer set-top box was running Android TV OS 14. The latest update does not bring Android 15 to the TV box.

The update for the Google TV Streamer is just 35.35 MB in size. It is reportedly carrying the version number UTT3.240625.001.K9. Google hasn’t updated the changelog. Hence, it is difficult to ascertain the actual contents of the update. Google has mentioned the update contains, “bug fixes and performance improvements.”

The 0-day release of the Google TV Streamer box had the August 2024 security patch. Google hasn’t even updated the security patch to October or November 2024. Although small, the update asks users to reboot the Android TV box after successfully installing itself on the device.
