Lecturers across the country have been directed to embark on a nationwide strike action following the non-payment of part of their 2025 salaries by the government.
This directive was handed to the lecturers by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday, July 7.
Confirming the issuance of the directive, ASUU’s President, Professor Chris Piwuna said all branches of the union have been ordered to withdraw their services across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
He said that the decision of the union follows the delay in the payment of the June 2025 salaries to its members.
Piwuna added that while the government has enforced the “No work, no pay” strategy, the National Executive Council of the union has also adopted a “no pay, no work” plan.
It was gathered that two institutions – the University of Jos and the University of Abuja – have already complied with ASUU’s directive.
The ASUU president also decried the nonchalant and lackadaisical attitude of the government towards lecturers.
He said, “What they are doing is just enforcing an NEC resolution. We have agreed at NEC that our members are going through a lot since our migration out of the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System.
“Certainly, our salaries are delayed for a week and sometimes 10 days before our members receive the paltry amount we get to help us carry out our duties well.
“Therefore, we agreed that if there is no pay, there will be no work,” Piwuna said.
