The nineteen northern Governors, as well as traditional rulers from the region, met on Monday at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna State.
Naijaonpoint understands the meeting focused on issues affecting the region, including the challenges of insecurity.
Present at the meeting were Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna), Umar Bago (Niger), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), while others were represented by their deputies.
Traditional rulers, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar lll, are also part of the emergency meeting.
The meeting had earlier been scheduled for Saturday, November 29, to address the worsening security situation in the region, but had to be shifted as governors from the seven North-West states engage in a separate security session with federal authorities.
Speaking previously about the agenda of the meeting, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to the Nasarawa State Governor, Peter Ahemba, explained that the meeting would have in attendance prominent traditional rulers, who are expected to offer strategic input as key custodians of grassroots security intelligence.
“The meeting aims to develop a unified approach to tackling security concerns affecting the region and discuss the way forward on security matters,” he said.
The governor’s aide expressed confidence that far-reaching resolutions would emerge from the gathering.
He said the Nasarawa State Government had already convened an emergency security meeting ahead of the regional summit to forestall possible breaches.
“Due to the security challenges in some northern states, the Nasarawa State Government has taken proactive measures by organizing an emergency security meeting, where decisive decisions will be made to prevent any breach of security in the state,” he added.
Ahemba appealed to residents to complement government efforts by giving timely information to security operatives.
