The AFL community is now mourning the passing of former Hawk and Tiwi Islands Football League president Willie Rioli Senior. The 50-year-old sadly suffered a heart attack and passed away on Tuesday night, AFL Northern Territory confirmed.
His beloved son, West Coast’s Willie Rioli Junior, has now taken an indefinite leave from the AFL to return to be with his family in the Northern Territory.

Willie Rioli Senior died at the young age of 50 from a heart attack. The AFL community is in awe and shocked at the sudden passing of the talented player.
Willie Snr’s former WAFL club South Fremantle said it was “deeply saddened” by his shock passing. Hawthorn also issued their own statement, extending its sincere condolences to the Rioli family, which includes four-time premiership Hawk Cyril Rioli – who was the nephew of Willie Snr. “The club’s thoughts are with them at this difficult time,” the statement read. West Coast described the Rioli family as an “intrinsic part” of the club.
Sean Bowden, the chairman of AFL Northern Territory reported that the league was mourning the loss of Willie Snr. “Willie was a proud Tiwi man – always respectful and holding to the strongest of values in the way he conducted himself,” Bowden said. “He was a valuable, passionate, and down-to-earth mentor for the footy community on the Islands and it was a privilege to play against him and in later years, work beside him.”
