THE Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the resumption of passenger train services on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor, effective today.
In a statement signed by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation said the service will recommence following the completion of all safety, technical, and operational checks.
Train operations on the route were suspended after a derailment on August 26 — the second at the same station in just over a year.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) later confirmed that the accident was caused by faulty infrastructure and lapses in NRC’s safety management.
According to the NRC, out of the 583 passengers on board at the time of the incident, 530 were contacted, and 512 have already received refunds.
It added that all 22 injured passengers were contacted and many visited by its medical team, with each entitled to one free ride per week until December 31, 2025.
Additionally, all 618 passengers onboard the ill-fated train will be offered a free ride before year-end.
The corporation also released a new timetable for the Abuja–Kaduna service:
Abuja–Kaduna: Idu (8:45 am) → Kubwa (9:05 am) → Rigasa (12:42 pm, arrival)
Kaduna–Abuja: Rigasa (2:30 pm) → Kubwa (6:02 pm) → Idu (6:23 pm, arrival)
It further disclosed that Wednesdays have now been designated for routine maintenance on the corridor.
“The NRC deeply appreciates the patience and understanding of Nigerians, especially passengers, during the suspension. We remain committed to providing safe, reliable, and affordable rail transport that supports national connectivity and economic growth,” the statement read.
