Germany’s institutions of higher education registered a total of 474,900 new entrants in the academic year of 2022, based on the figures of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
The same source revealed that there was noted an increase of 2,500, or 0.5 per cent, during the summer semester of 2022 and winter semester of 2022/23 in comparison to the academic year of 2021, still 7 per cent less than in 2019 before the spread of the COVID-19 and its new variants, during which year the figures stood at 508,700, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Destatis statistics revealed that there was marked a 10 per cent increase in the number of foreigners in the first semester of the academic year 2022.
“The foreign first-semester students alone accounted for the slight increase in the number of first entrants. Their number increased by 10 per cent to 128,500 years on year and exceeded even the pre-pandemic level of 2019 (125,400),” the statement reads.
In addition last year, about 385,000 pupils in Germany attained the qualification to pursue their studies in a university or university of applied sciences.
The figures prove that there was experienced a 2.1 per cent decline in the number of those considered qualified to enter higher education in comparison to a year earlier figures (8,300 declines).
“The falling numbers are partly due to demographic factors. As of 31 December 2021, the number of people in the relevant age group (17-19 years) had decreased by 0.6 per cent on a year earlier,” Destatis figures revealed.
Germany continues to welcome a large number of foreign students who chose this country as their favourite destination in order to finish their studies.
Previously the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) revealed that there were nearly 325,000 students from other countries headed to Germany for the winter semester of 2020/21, accounting for a surge of a total of 70 per cent.
DAAD figures showed that the number of foreign students at German universities in the winter semester of 2010/11 stood at 184,960 or up to 324,729 registered in the same period in the 2020/21 academic year, accounting for an increase of a total of 75.5 per cent.
“The number of international students at German universities continued to rise in the winter semester of 2020/21, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, to 324,729 (+1.5 per cent). They account for 11 per cent of all students in Germany; at universities, this figure is 12.6 per cent; at universities of applied sciences, 8.6 per cent,” the report notes.
The figures provided by Destatis revealed that there was a registered decrease in the number of German students interested in studying at institutions of higher education located outside the country.
In 2020, there were 133,400 German students of higher education abroad, or a decline of 3.3 per cent (4,500) compared to the figures of a year earlier.
