SENATOR Ned Nwoko has urged the federal government to establish ranches in all 774 local government areas and the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to boost food security and modernize livestock farming in Nigeria.
In an interview with newsmen today in Abuja, Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, revealed that his proposal is contained in a bill currently before the Senate.
Titled “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment, Development, and Management of Ranches in the 774 Local Government Areas and the Federal Capital Territory, to Promote Modern Livestock Farming, Curb Open Grazing, Enhance Food Security, and for Related Matters,” the legislation seeks to create a legal framework for sustainable ranching nationwide.
Nwoko, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment, explained that the bill would promote modern ranching practices, reduce conflicts between farmers and herders, and ensure environmental sustainability.
It also proposes state-level oversight on land allocation, the creation of a Ranch Management and Development Agency, and provisions for funding through public-private partnerships.
He emphasized that the legislation outlines mechanisms for conflict resolution, regulation of ranch operations, and livestock welfare in line with veterinary standards.
It also aims to guarantee fair compensation and resettlement for communities whose lands are acquired for ranching projects.
Beyond addressing open grazing, the senator noted that the bill would foster cooperation between federal, state, and local governments, encourage private sector participation, and stimulate economic development through job creation and integration of ranching into local economies.
According to Nwoko, the initiative is designed to strengthen national food security by promoting sustainable livestock production systems while safeguarding the rights of individuals, communities, and stakeholders under the Land Use Act and related laws.
