The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC) has explained why Rita Uguamaye was not issued a Certificate of National Service (CNS) after completing the mandatory one-year service.
In a statement issued on Sunday, August 10, the NYSC said the claim by Uguamaye – with the State Code number LA/24B/8325 – that she had completed her service year was false.
Recall that the corps member had been on the radar for criticising the government of President Bola Tinubu over the hardship in the country.
She also condemned the failure of the NYSC to implement the approved national minimum wage for corps members serving in different states across Nigeria among many others.
Her remarks also caused outrage among supporters of the president and the All Progressives Congress (APC) who called for the NYSC to sanction her.
Despite various protests and support from notable Nigerians including activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, Uguamaye over the weekend announced that the NYSC failed to release her certificate.
Giving further explanation, Uguamaye said her state refused to clear her in the month of April despite being available for her monthly clearance.
However, reacting to her post, the NYSC said Uguamaye’s claim that she had been denied a certificate of service was unfounded and misleading.
“Rita is among the 131 Corps Members whose Certificates of National Service (CNS), were withheld for valid disciplinary reasons. Specifically, Rita’s service year has been extended by two months for failing to attend the April 2025 biometrics clearance, a decision that aligns with the NYSC Bye-Laws.
“It is important to note that this extension is a standard procedure and not unique to her case, and the principle of equal treatment was only applied in this case.
“The NYSC Management thus urges the public to approach this matter with understanding, as extending service for non-compliance is a longstanding tradition within the NYSC and should not be politicised.
“The NYSC Scheme remains committed to discharging its mandate, in line with the dictates of the constitution,” the NYSC stated.
