PETER Obi has expressed his satisfaction of Kemi Badenoch’s election as the new leader of Britain’s Conservative Party.

Badenoch won the election on Saturday, succeeding Rishi Sunak, and she is the first individual of African descent to lead the Tories.

The Conservative Party announced her victory in a post on X on Saturday, stating, “ANNOUNCED: @KemiBadenoch has been elected Leader of the Conservative Party.”

At 44 years old, Badenoch triumphed over Robert Jenrick after a four-month contest following Sunak’s resignation. The election saw a turnout of 72%, as reported by Conservative MP Bob Blackman.

In response, Obi took to social media yesterday to characterize her victory as a significant affirmation of the potential of Nigerian and African youth on a global scale.

“The encouraging news of Nigerian-born @KemiBadenoch becoming the leader of the Conservative Party in the UK comes at a crucial moment when many Nigerians are questioning their capabilities due to current events in the country.

“Badenoch’s election stands as a strong testament to the global potential of Nigerian and African youth.

“Her achievement highlights the power of diversity and emphasizes the opportunities that arise when competence, capability, integrity, and inclusivity are prioritized.

“This milestone is both motivating and a call to action, drawing attention to the leadership dilemma in Nigeria, where younger leaders with proven skills and integrity are often overlooked in favor of older individuals who may not possess the same drive and attributes.

“As we celebrate Kemi’s success, let it serve as a catalyst for transformation in our leadership landscape.

“It is time to move beyond outdated practices of tribalism, religious prejudice, and the “my turn” mentality, and to cultivate an environment that values competence, capacity, integrity, fresh ideas, and progressive leadership.

“Welcoming a new generation of leaders can create a brighter future for Nigeria and Africa. Congratulations, Kemi Badenoch.”
