Nottingham Forest have strengthened their push for a strong finish in Women’s Super League 2 with the signing of Nigeria forward Joy Omewa from Danish champions Fortuna Hjørring, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 23-year-old has joined the club on a permanent deal that runs until the end of the 2025/26 season. She arrives with a reputation as one of the most reliable goalscorers in Denmark’s top flight.

Forest confirmed the move in a statement on their official website, hailing the capture of a forward who brings both experience and a proven winning mentality.

Omewa spent five years with Fortuna Hjørring and leaves the club having scored more than 50 goals in all competitions. Her time in Denmark was decorated with silverware, including two Danish Women’s Cup triumphs and the Kvindeligaen title in the 2024-25 season. That memorable double-winning campaign also saw her crowned the league’s Player of the Season, pointing to her importance to one of Scandinavia’s most successful women’s sides.

Her journey to the top level began in Nigeria with Confluence Queens before she moved to Europe in April 2021 to join Boldklubben af 1893 (B.93), where she scored three goals in nine appearances.

A move to Fortuna Hjørring later that year proved decisive, providing the platform for her rapid rise and consistent goalscoring impact.

Internationally, Omewa has represented Nigeria at under-17 and under-20 level and won her first senior cap for the Super Falcons last year. She was also involved in Nigeria’s two-legged victory over Benin that sealed qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Nottingham Forest welcome Joy Omewa

Forest head coach Carly Davies made no secret of her excitement about the signing, saying:

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Joy Omewa to Nottingham Forest.

“Joy’s incredible goalscoring prowess speaks for itself. She’s a dynamic forward with a natural instinct in front of goal, and her ability to find the net consistently at both club and international level makes her a fantastic addition to our squad.

“Joy is exactly the type of player who can help us push forward and achieve our ambitions.”

Omewa, meanwhile, is eager to begin her new chapter in England. She said:

“I am delighted to sign for Nottingham Forest. It’s an ambitious club and I’m excited to be a part of this team.

“I can’t wait to get started for this club and I think I can add a lot to an already talented group at Forest.”

Forest are currently sixth in WSL2, level on points with Newcastle United, and face a demanding run of fixtures against promotion contenders Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic. Omewa’s arrival is seen as a timely boost as the club looks to climb the table.

She also becomes the latest Nigerian to be associated with Nottingham Forest, following in the footsteps of Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi on the men’s side.
