OGUN: Man arrested for raping mentally-unstable housewife

Ogun 1

THE Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a man named Tahiru Hamidu for allegedly engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a mentally unstable married woman (name withheld) in the Owode community, situated in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest yesterday.

The suspect is accused of exploiting the victim’s condition to engage in non-consensual sexual acts on multiple occasions before being arrested by officers from the Owode Egba Division on September 12, 2024.

The suspect is also alleged to have threatened to kill the victim’s brother-in-law, identified only as Shofolahan, if he did not allow him to continue assaulting his brother’s wife.

In one instance, Hamidu, who hails from Northern Nigeria, reportedly lured the victim to a cassava plantation, where he allegedly raped her several times before letting her go.

Odutola stated, “The victim is mentally incapacitated. The brother-in-law who reported the case claims the suspect threatened to kill him to prevent him from intervening. The suspect is accused of repeatedly engaging in sexual acts with the victim.

“He is also alleged to have lured her to a cassava plantation in the community, where he engaged in non-consensual sexual intercourse with her multiple times.

“He began threatening the brother-in-law, warning him to stop obstructing his access to the victim and demanding that he hand her over to him.”

Odutola added that the investigation into the crime is ongoing following the suspect’s arrest.

A similar incident was reported in March 2024, where a 26-year-old man named Usman Bube was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape his pregnant neighbor’s wife at the Ogatalo Fulani Camp in the Imala area of the state.

The suspect allegedly broke into his neighbor’s apartment, finding the pregnant woman asleep, and attempted to commit the crime, knowing her husband, Muhammed Awwalu, was away from the community.

When his repeated attempts to forcefully engage in unlawful sexual intercourse with the woman failed, he reportedly pulled out a knife in an attempt to silence and overpower her.

However, he was apprehended by other neighbors before he could succeed.
