THE President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to enable him access proper medical treatment.
In a video message shared today, Azuta-Mbata also urged Igbos across Nigeria to participate actively in the ongoing voter registration exercise by obtaining their permanent voter cards, stressing the importance of political engagement.
Kanu, arrested in 2015 on charges bordering on treasonable felony, fled the country after jumping bail in 2017.
He was later rearrested in Kenya in 2021 and has since been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
His continued detention has remained one of Nigeria’s most divisive political and security issues.
Azuta-Mbata argued that the government stands to gain little by keeping Kanu in detention, insisting that a political solution offers a more sustainable path forward.
“The government has no serious advantage in keeping him further. It must ensure his safety and allow him to seek medical treatment without delay,” he said.
