THE Olubadan-In-Council has officially endorsed former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The ratification took place at the new Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, following the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, on July 7, 2025.

As the Otun Olubadan, the highest-ranking chief on the civil line of succession, Ladoja was next in line to ascend the throne, in keeping with Ibadan’s unique rotational chieftaincy system.

Announcing the endorsement, the Balogun of Ibadanland, Tajudeen Ajibola, stated that Ladoja’s name will be formally presented to Governor Seyi Makinde for approval and subsequent installation.

“The Council believes Ladoja brings extensive experience and wisdom to the role,” Ajibola said. “His tenure as governor and his deep roots in the community make him a strong candidate to guide Ibadan into a new chapter.”

Ajibola added that Ladoja’s leadership is expected to usher in an era of unity and development while preserving the traditions of Ibadanland.

Born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari village near Ibadan, Ladoja attended Ibadan Boys High School and Olivet Baptist High School before earning a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Liège, Belgium. He began his career at Total Nigeria before moving into business and later politics.

Ladoja served as Oyo State Governor from May 2003 until his impeachment in January 2006. He was reinstated by the Supreme Court in December 2006 and completed his term in May 2007.

In August 2024, Ladoja took on the title of Otun Olubadan after accepting the ceremonial beaded crown—an essential step in qualifying for the Olubadan throne under the reformed chieftaincy laws.

Speaking on a private radio station last year, Ladoja had said, “By the grace of God, I will become Olubadan. My blood pressure has remained normal; whoever God has destined for the throne will ascend it.”

A formal public presentation is expected to take place in the coming weeks after the governor’s official confirmation.
