Netanyahu says Israel will determine which foreign forces are ‘unacceptable’ in Gaza
Several countries have offered to participate in an international stabilization force for Gaza, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, even as key details—including the force’s mandate—are still being worked out.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized Sunday that Israel would decide “which forces are unacceptable to us.” He added that the U.S. fully supports this approach. Rubio, visiting Israel, said the force would need to include countries Israel is “comfortable with,” while any potential involvement of the Palestinian Authority remains uncertain.
The remarks come as tensions continue in Gaza. Israel carried out a “targeted strike” Saturday against a member of the Islamic Jihad organization, citing an imminent threat to its forces. President Donald Trump said the U.S.-backed ceasefire remains in place, though both sides have accused each other of violations. Thirteen Israeli hostages remain in Gaza, with Hamas warning it will take time to locate and return the bodies.
Rubio noted that while many countries have expressed interest in contributing to the stabilization mission, governments want clarity on the force’s legal framework, rules of engagement, and mission objectives. He said the operation would need to function as an international effort, potentially under the United Nations.
Countries including Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Qatar, and Azerbaijan have indicated a willingness to participate, according to senior U.S. advisers. Trump said the force could be deployed “pretty quickly” and that leaders for the mission are currently being selected. He also stressed that Hamas must comply with the ceasefire terms, including returning the bodies of the remaining hostages, or other nations involved in the peace effort may take action.
