Osgood Perkins' New Mystery Horror Sets Lowest Rotten Tomatoes Score In The Last Two Years

Unfortunately, Oz Perkins’ filmography could be in a decline, as of now, with his new movie Keeper debuting to a record low score for the filmmaker. The rising horror director, known for his terrifying collaborations with Neon in recent years — Longlegs and The Monkey — was seemingly on a winning streak, with these two hits coming out only six months apart.

Now, Keeper, starring Perkins’ frequent collaborator Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, comes out in theaters tomorrow (November 14). The horror mystery follows a couple questioning their relationship (as suggested by the trailer) as they retreat to a secluded cabin to celebrate their anniversary, where Maslany’s Liz is terrorized by something sinister.

The marketing for Keeper was incredibly vague, which reviewers now say was purposeful. Like Longlegs before it, Keeper was aiming to draw audiences in with suspense and mystery, but it also has Perkins’ excellent track record on its side, which may still help it sell seats even amid mixed reviews. Scores are subject to change with more reviews, but Keeper is starting on uneven footing.

That is, Keeper debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 63% from 16 critics’ reviews, meaning it is just “certified fresh.” However, this makes it the lowest-rated Rotten Tomatoes movie that Perkins has directed in the last two years, as Longlegs currently has a Tomatometer score of 86% and The Monkey 77%. Keeper is also currently the second-lowest-rated movie Perkins has directed overall.

Perkins could rebound soon with his next project, The Young People, which just cast Nicole Kidman. This upcoming movie, which currently has no announced plot details, will be led by The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Lola Tung and How to Train Your Dragon‘s Nico Parker, with Maslany again returning to collaborate with Perkins.

Every actor or filmmaker is bound to have a few titles that are underwhelming if they are setting out to pursue a full career. Keeper might be one of Perkins’ low points, or just not him at his absolute best. But the new movie still has its defenders as some more positive reviews come in, while The Young People could be for Perkins what Weapons was for Zach Cregger.
