Osun 2026: Bishops, Christian Group Declare Support for Adeleke, Say He Has ‘Divine Duties to Fulfill’

The World Bishops Council (WBC) – Africa Chapter has urged Osun residents to massively vote for the incumbent Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in the August 15 governorship election, citing his peaceful disposition and commitment to religious harmony.

In a statement issued in Osogbo by WBC’s Leader in Osun State, Bishop Mike Adebomi, the Council described Adeleke as “a man of destiny” whose tenure has fostered peace and cordial relations between Christians and Muslims in the state.

The Council recalled periods in Osun’s history when adherents of both faiths were at loggerheads and had to resort to litigation over issues that could have been resolved amicably.

“Key gladiators in government then and who were parts of this unfortunate incident are today seeking to still become our governor. But Adeleke’s tenure brought peace. And we feel that a person who brought peace and restored the broken wall should be supported,” the statement read.

The Bishops also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security agencies to ensure a free and fair election on August 15.

In a related development, the Religious Engagement (Christianity) Committee working for the governor’s reelection declared total support for Adeleke, describing him as “the best among those contesting” in terms of experience.

At a meeting held in Osogbo on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, attended by the Committee’s Chairman, Sub-Committees leaders, Liaison Officers and Coordinators from the 30 Local Governments and Ife-East Area Office, Modakeke, members resolved to mobilize voters for the governor’s reelection.

In a communique signed by the Chairman, Bishop Seun Adeoye; Vice-chairman, Pastor Wale Akinyemi; and Assistant Secretary, Rev. Caleb Akanni, the group expressed confidence in Adeleke’s ability to deliver more dividends of democracy.

“Governor Ademola Adeleke is a man of grace. You can’t fight a man that is endued with grace and win. His strength is in his ability to recognize his Creator and give Him praises. He is the David of our time,” the statement read.

The Committee said its support was based on the belief that the governor “has divine duties to still fulfill in Osun State.”

It also declared a 7-day fasting and prayer program from Saturday, August 8 to Friday, August 14 for peaceful conduct of the polls and for Governor Adeleke’s success.
