The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, led by its Chairman, Hon. Abiodun Idowu, has distributed 30 security patrol vehicles to security agencies in the state.
The ALGON Chairman described the gesture as a demonstration of commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of the people.
Speaking on Monday at the flag-off ceremony held at the Osun State Police Command headquarters, Idowu emphasized that security remains the bedrock of any meaningful development, noting that society cannot thrive and governments cannot achieve developmental goals without peace and stability.
Idowu stressed that local governments are the closest tier of government to the grassroots, allowing council chairmen to understand the peculiar security challenges within their communities.
He urged residents of the state to cooperate with security agencies to secure their environment.
“I must appreciate the police and other security agencies in Osun State for their quick response in nipping kidnapping in the bud, particularly in Ifedayo Local Government and Ora town, where three people who were recently kidnapped were successfully released.”
“This incident could have opened a window for wider criminality in Osun State. Furthermore, we cannot easily forget the gruesome killing of our late colleague and Council Chairman, Hon. Remi Abbas, around February 2025, which occurred as he attempted to resume work following our favorable Appeal Court judgment on February 10, 2025,” Idowu said.
He warned that a repeat of such killings and other criminal activities must not be allowed to occur, especially with the fast-approaching governorship and other elections.
He reiterated that the security of lives and property must never be taken lightly.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu Nadada, commended the Osun State Chapter of ALGON for donating the operational vehicles, noting that the gesture will significantly strengthen security operations across the state.
