The Corps Commander of Osun Amotekun Corps, Isaac Omoyele, narrowly escaped death after being ambushed and shot by armed gunmen in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, late Monday night.
The attack occurred at about 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road, shortly after the commander left the Amotekun Corps Headquarters for his residence.
It was reported that Omoyele’s private vehicle came under heavy gunfire from unidentified assailants who appeared to have laid in wait for him.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Tuesday, the Amotekun Corps spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu Abass, said the commander sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility in the state capital.
“The Commander sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility. His condition is said to be stable, and he is under protective watch,” the statement read.
Abass added that the case had been formally reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, Osogbo, while investigations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators.
“The case has been officially reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, and investigations are currently underway. However, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motive remains unclear,” he said.
Police authorities in Osun have yet to issue an official statement, but sources within the command confirmed that detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have been assigned to work with Amotekun officials to unravel the motive behind the attack.
A top Amotekun officer, who requested anonymity, described the incident as a “targeted assault,” adding that the attack occurred minutes after Omoyele left his office.
“It was clearly a planned operation. The gunmen were heavily armed and fired multiple shots at his vehicle. Luckily, he managed to escape alive,” the source said.
