The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed concerns over the recent wave of defections from its ranks, describing those leaving the party as “greedy and selfish.”
Speaking on ARISE TV’s NewsNight programme, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said there is no genuine reason for anyone to dump the party at this time.
According to him, “Those leaving the PDP are leaving out of greed and selfishness.”
He insisted that the opposition party remains strong and united ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abdullahi maintained that the PDP had resolved its major internal issues and was now focused on rebuilding a solid front to challenge the ruling party in future polls.
“You cannot find any compelling reason that will warrant them leaving. Our party is in good standing; we have addressed our major problems,” he said.
The PDP spokesman noted that some defectors were only driven by personal ambition, coercion, or the lure of incentives from the ruling party. He said their exit would not weaken the PDP but instead strengthen it.
In his words, “It’s nothing other than greed, avarice, and selfishness on the part of those leaving… But to the best of PDP, it’s good riddance to bad rubbish.”
Abdullahi expressed confidence that the party’s forthcoming national convention would further unite members and position the PDP as a formidable opposition ready to “retrieve the country” from what he described as “an army of occupation called government, masquerading in the garb of democrats.”
He also criticised some governors allegedly considering defection, saying they had benefited from the PDP and should not betray the platform that brought them to power.
“I can’t understand why a sitting governor of all persons who must have been promoted by a political party would now get attracted to those they once campaigned against,” he said.
Mr Ibrahim reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to internal democracy, adding that the party was prepared to withstand any form of political temptation or intimidation as it prepares for 2027.
However, the PDP has lost some key members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), sparking talks of internal cracks within the opposition.
Recently, the Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and his Enugu State counterpart, Governor Peter Mbah defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
These moves have raised concerns over the strength and unity of the PDP ahead of the next general elections.
