The management of Abuja-based travel agency, SMT Limited, has raised concerns over the alleged unlawful detention of one of its staff members, Mr Dan Wesley, who was reportedly taken away at gunpoint and held at the Guards Brigade, Mambilla Barracks, Abuja, by individuals identified as military personnel.
The firm alleged that the arrest followed a dispute linked to a Canada work visa application.
It was gathered that an agent identified as Mr Leo had introduced a client, Mrs Bridget Ladi, to the company for assistance with securing a Canadian work visa.
According to the firm, an interview was conducted between the client and a prospective employer as part of the standard procedure. However, after the interview stage, the employer reportedly declined to proceed with the application.
The company claimed that the development led to tension, as the agent demanded a refund on behalf of the client.
The management alleged that Mr Leo visited its office on King Jaja Street, Gwarimpa, Abuja, on two occasions accompanied by armed personnel in a military police van reportedly attached to the Guards Brigade, Mambilla Barracks.
The armed team was said to have been led by a warrant officer identified as W.O. Abubakar.
According to SaharaReporters, the firm disclosed that on January 20, 2026, the agent was advised to submit a formal written request for a refund in line with the company’s policy, which allows up to 60 days for processing.
According to the management, the agent allegedly rejected the procedure and mobilised armed personnel, leading to the arrest of Wesley.
The company alleged that the staff member was taken into custody at gunpoint, subjected to maltreatment and has since been held incommunicado.
It also claimed it was informed that the detention was carried out on instructions “from above,” a situation it described as disturbing.
The firm condemned what it termed harassment, intimidation and abuse of authority, calling for Wesley’s immediate release.
It maintained that all its dealings with the client were handled professionally and in line with established procedures.
A source familiar with the incident told newsmen that attempts to secure Wesley’s release had so far been unsuccessful.
