Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has disclosed that more than 3,000 residents have been displaced and others affected by flooding incidents recorded across the state between January and October 2025.
Sanwo-Olu made the disclosure on Monday during the 2025 World Habitat Day celebration held in Ikeja, Lagos, where he called for stronger collaboration to build flood resilience, safeguard lives, and protect livelihoods.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the governor stated that Lagos, as a coastal megacity, faces growing environmental challenges and must take sustained, decisive action to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“As an aquatic state, flooding remains one of the biggest challenges confronting Lagos. It is an environmental threat capable of causing massive destruction,” he said.
He revealed that in 2025 alone, over 57,000 residents were affected, with more than 3,000 displaced and several homes damaged.
According to him, the state government has implemented proactive measures to tackle the issue through comprehensive urban planning and infrastructure initiatives.
Sanwo-Olu outlined key policies such as sustainable land use planning, resilient infrastructure development, affordable housing, green space creation, and climate adaptation strategies, coordinated through the Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO) under the T.H.E.M.E.S.+ Agenda.
“Emergency response is only one part of the solution,” he said. “To build a resilient and sustainable Lagos, we must strengthen flood early warning systems, improve urban drainage, and deepen collaboration with federal agencies, humanitarian partners, and local communities.”
The governor also urged private investors, development partners, and innovators to support climate adaptation efforts and mangrove restoration projects.
