Palestinian centre warns of “legalised killing” under prisoner execution law

The Palestinian Center for the Defence of Prisoners has warned that recent statements by Itamar Ben-Gvir reveal a “premeditated intention” by the Israeli occupation to expand the killing of Palestinian prisoners under legal cover.

In a statement reported Tuesday, the center said that Ben-Gvir’s assertion that the execution law is applicable to a large proportion of prisoners — estimated at around 80%, particularly from the West Bank — indicates a clear move toward broadening the scope of targeting rather than limiting it.

The center also pointed to remarks referring to the inclusion of so-called “elite elements,” arguing that such classifications are being used to justify wider application of the law.

According to the statement, the Israeli occupation authorities continue to classify a significant number of detainees from the Gaza Strip — estimated at around 1,450 prisoners — under this category, in what the center described as an effort to create legal grounds for applying the law to them.

The organization said these developments contradict earlier claims that the law would be limited in scope, asserting instead that it is being used as a tool for systematic targeting within prisons.

It added that what is being implemented is “not legal legislation in the traditional sense,” but rather a framework aimed at legalising killing, within what it described as a broader policy targeting the physical elimination of prisoners.
