Tension gripped the Oromeruzimagu community in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State after residents uncovered an unexploded ordnance while digging a grave in a family compound.

Naijaonpoint reports that the villagers, unaware of the risks, reportedly carried the device into an air-conditioned room in a bid to prevent detonation before calling in the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division, which later evacuated the explosive.

Reacting in a statement on Monday, spokesman of the 6 Division, Lt. Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, cautioned against civilian interference with military-grade explosives.

Danjuma stated, “This act calls for caution, as handling such sensitive military-graded Ammunition requires technical capability.

“Thus, members of the public are enjoined to please report such discoveries to the nearest security agency and avoid resorting to the dangerous practice of self-help. This cautionary notice becomes necessary in view of the devastating impact such high-trajectory weapons could have on the environment.”

Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, in his reaction to the incident, commended the community for eventually reporting the matter.

Naijaonpoint reports that Emekah reassured residents of the Niger Delta region that trained personnel have been deployed to evacuate and dispose of such items safely whenever they are discovered.
