ELEVEN members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have rejected the reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, insisting that the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will hold as scheduled on Monday, June 30.
This rebuttal follows an earlier press briefing by PDP Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, who announced the cancellation of the NEC meeting and the return of Anyanwu to office.
In a strongly worded statement, the NWC members denounced Damagum’s actions, declaring them unconstitutional and without authority.
They emphasized that only the NEC, as the party’s highest decision-making body—second only to the National Convention—has the power to make such decisions.
“The pronouncements by the Acting National Chairman have no foundation,” the statement read. “No organ, officer, or group within the PDP can override the resolution of the NEC under the party’s constitution as amended in 2017.”
The statement, jointly signed by prominent party officials including Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja; Acting National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo; National Treasurer, Ahmed Yayari Mohammed; and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, among others, reaffirmed that Anyanwu’s status remains unresolved and must be addressed at the forthcoming NEC meeting.
The intra-party tension underscores ongoing power struggles within the PDP as it navigates internal leadership disputes and prepares for strategic decisions in the months ahead.
