The Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, has dismissed claims of a political comeback by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting the party is becoming increasingly irrelevant in the state.
Dungurawa made this known while reacting to recent allegations by opposition parties accusing the state government of mismanaging funds allocated to education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
He described the accusations as baseless and politically driven, arguing that the opposition had failed to deliver when they held power.
“First of all, we thank them for at least acknowledging that we are present and active. But we remind them that they had eight years in power and left behind nothing meaningful to show for it,” he told journalists in Kano.
He criticised the former administration for focusing on superficial, white elephant projects that did little to meet the real needs of Kano residents.
“Take the underpass in Dangi, for example. That structure has no clear purpose. There was no traffic congestion to warrant such a project. It’s just a display of concrete, not a functional piece of infrastructure,” he said.
Dungurawa maintained that under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the NNPP-led government has shifted focus to purposeful infrastructure, rehabilitating roads and building practical overpasses that improve movement within the city.
“Today, it is difficult to find a single pothole in Kano. Our roads are new, our markings are visible, streetlights functional, and even our gantries and road guides are in place. This shows that the rightful owners of the state have taken charge,” he said.
He also defended the state government’s effort to clear pension arrears, disclosing that over N27 billion has been paid out of the N48 billion debt inherited from the previous government.
“In just two years, we’ve paid off N27 billion in pensions—N22 billion previously and another N5 billion to be disbursed in December. That is proof of our commitment to responsible governance,” he said.
Responding to claims by some opposition leaders that their parties are regaining momentum, Dungurawa dismissed the remarks as “empty political propaganda,” insisting that the PDP and others lack internal cohesion and grassroots support.
“Even in their own homes, some of these opposition figures don’t have support. PDP is not bouncing back. If anything, it is bouncing out of relevance. Their leadership is disorganized and self-serving,” he added.
On the subject of ongoing political realignments and reported alliances involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he said the developments further reflect the internal disarray within the PDP.
“If the PDP’s presidential candidate is now joining another party, what does that tell you? It shows the party has no structure or direction. Serious political actors have already abandoned them,” he said.
