The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed the authority of its National Caretaker Committee and approved March 28 and 29, 2026, for the party’s National Convention.
The decision was taken at the 105th NEC meeting held in Abuja on Monday, where members unanimously ratified all resolutions reached at the party’s emergency 104th NEC meeting of December 7, 2025, declaring them valid and binding.
The NEC also endorsed a recent judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which upheld the legality of the party’s current leadership structure.
Following the ruling, NEC formally directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee as the lawful administrative authority of the party.
The committee urged all PDP organs, members and stakeholders to comply strictly with subsisting court judgments, while also calling on INEC and other relevant institutions to respect and implement the ruling.
Reaffirming its position, NEC declared that the National Caretaker Committee remains the only lawful national administrative organ of the PDP pending the conduct of a duly convened National Convention.
As part of preparations for the transition to an elected leadership, NEC approved a timetable for nationwide congresses:
Ward Congresses – February 2026
Local Government Congresses – February 2026
State Congresses – March 2026
The caretaker committee was directed to issue detailed guidelines for the conduct of the congresses in line with the PDP Constitution and INEC regulations.
NEC also approved the extension of the tenure of caretaker committees at the national, state and zonal levels until the conclusion of the congresses and the National Convention.
In addition, the National Caretaker Committee was mandated to immediately commence preparations for the convention, including the constitution of sub-committees and arrangement of logistics.
Calling for unity and discipline within the party, NEC urged members to remain loyal and committed, stressing that the PDP is focused on rebuilding a strong, stable and competitive platform ahead of future elections.
The committee expressed confidence that the resolutions taken would restore stability, strengthen internal democracy and reposition the party for electoral success.
