Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have thrown their weight behind the recent court ruling that nullified the party’s congresses in Rivers State.
The NWC members, led by National Treasurer, Ahmed Mohammed and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, made their position known during a visit to Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday night.
The delegation also held a closed-door meeting with Governor Fubara as part of efforts to realign the party and strategize for the 2027 elections.
Speaking after the meeting, Ahmed Mohammed reaffirmed Governor Fubara’s position as the leader of the party in Rivers State.
“Our visit is aimed at fostering unity, stability, and repositioning the party in Rivers State for a comeback in the 2027 elections,” he said.
Naijaonpoint reports that he also reiterated the NWC’s support for Ude Okoye, who was recently reinstated as the PDP National Secretary by the Court of Appeal.
“We urge all party stakeholders and governors to rally behind Okoye for the progress of the PDP,” Mohammed added.
The court ruling, which annulled the Ward, Local, and State congresses previously won by allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stirred ripples within the PDP.
The congresses, conducted last year, were overshadowed by conflicting court orders. While a State High Court restrained the exercise, a Federal High Court gave the go-ahead.
The nullification has led to the emergence of an interim committee tasked with overseeing the party’s leadership in Rivers State.
The NWC’s visit comes days after PDP Youth Leaders from across the country met with Governor Fubara in a bid to resolve internal disputes and solidify his leadership.
The party’s youth wing emphasized the importance of unity to strengthen the PDP’s position ahead of the next electoral cycle.
With its focus on rebuilding and addressing internal challenges, the PDP appears to be positioning itself for a strong showing in the 2027 elections.
