Former Senate Minority Leader, Simon Mwadkwon, has expressed confidence that Plateau State will remain firmly under the control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regardless of whether Governor Caleb Mutfwang defects to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
Mwadkwon, who represented Plateau North in the National Assembly before his removal by an Appeal Court ruling, made this known during an interaction with journalists in Jos on Thursday.
Naijaonpoint reports that in recent weeks, speculations have circulated that Governor Mutfwang may be one of four PDP governors allegedly plotting to switch to the APC to boost his political chances.
But Mwadkwon dismissed the rumours, pointing out that the governor himself had publicly denied such claims.
“The Plateau State Governor has publicly denied any intention of joining the APC on several occasions; therefore, I don’t think he has any interest in doing so. Despite several appeals, he has refused to back down on this issue,” he said.
The former lawmaker maintained that Plateau’s political allegiance has long been rooted in the PDP and would remain so regardless of Mutfwang’s political future.
“Plateau is always a PDP state, and whether the governor leaves the party or not, the people of the state know that their love for the PDP is unparalleled,” he stated.
While advising the governor to stay put in the PDP, Mwadkwon stressed that even if he were to defect, the party would rally behind another strong candidate to secure victory in 2027.
He added: “If Gov. Mutfwang decides to leave the party and contest on another platform, the PDP would find a capable replacement for him and the party would win. The PDP is the only party where his best interest will be served.”
