Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fola Oyekunle, has emerged winner of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election held on Saturday.
Announcing the result in the early hours of Sunday, the Returning Officer, Abiodun Oluwadare, declared that Oyekunle polled 18,404 votes to defeat Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 8,312 votes.
Other candidates trailed far behind:
- Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) – 88 votes.
- Olabisi Olajumoke of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – 40 votes.
- Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) – 18 votes.
Oluwadare said: “Oyekunle of PDP, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner of the election.”
Naijaonpoint reports that ahead of the poll, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had described Oyekunle as “trustworthy, competent, and the best choice to represent the constituency.”
Speaking during the PDP campaign flag-off at Bodija Market, Ibadan, Makinde said the victory would “reinforce the dominance of the PDP in the state.”
The Ibadan North seat became vacant following the death of APC lawmaker, Olaide Akinremi, on July 10.
Akinremi, a ranking member of the House of Representatives, was until his passing the Chairman of the House Committee on Science and Research.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded the cancellation of the Shanono/Bagwai State Constituency by-election and the Ghari Constituency, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a rerun election in Kano State.
Naijaonpoint reports that a statement signed by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, cited widespread violence and disruption by armed thugs.
Morka stated that over 200 thugs were arrested by the police across the state during the exercise.
The ruling party also alleged that verifiable reports from Shanono, Bagwai and Ghari showed that voters fled polling units as security personnel were overwhelmed by violence.
The party maintained that proceeding with the elections under what it described as “utter brigandage and outright violent voter intimidation” would contravene the principles of free, fair, and peaceful polls and set what it called a dangerous precedent.
The statement added, “The APC calls on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately cancel the by-elections for Shanono/Bagwai constituency and the Ghari constituency rerun election in Kano State due to widespread extreme violence and election disruption by armed thugs across several polling units.”
