Peter Obi has voiced strong concern over the recent murder of a well-known social media voice in Kano, urging authorities to treat the case with urgency and fairness.
The former Anambra governor and potential 2027 presidential contender used his X platform on Friday to address the death of Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, a commentator based in the northern state.
Dan Shagamu lost his life on Monday night at his home in Gaida Quarters, located within Kumbotso Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that attackers forced their way into the residence around 11:30 pm and assaulted him with sharp weapons. Local vigilante members alerted police after discovering the intrusion.
Officers from the Kumbotso Division arrived promptly and transported the injured man to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano. Medical staff there pronounced him dead.
The Kano State Police Command later confirmed the arrest of two individuals linked to the attack.
Investigators continue questioning the suspects while forensic teams examine the scene to determine exactly what happened and why.
Obi described the incident as deeply troubling. In his public remarks, he stated, “The loss of Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu in his own home is a painful reminder that violence has no place in resolving differences.”
He added that no argument, online critique, or local disagreement should ever end in bloodshed.
Furthermore, Obi stressed the need to protect open discussion. “People who share their thoughts or challenge ideas must never feel threatened for simply speaking out,” he said.
He called on the Kano State Government and security forces to launch a complete, open, and unbiased probe.
Those found responsible, he insisted, must face the full weight of the law so that justice is served.
In addition, the former governor extended sympathy to the late commentator’s relatives, friends, and online community.
He prayed for comfort for those left behind and for the peaceful rest of Dan Shagamu’s soul. Freedom of speech, Obi noted, remains a right protected by Nigeria’s constitution and must be defended.
Meanwhile, police officials have reassured the public that the case will be fully pursued.
Once the investigation wraps up, the detained suspects are expected to face formal charges in court.
The developments continue to draw attention as calls grow for accountability in the wake of the killing.
