Pixel Watch 3 certified by the FCC with LTE, UWB, NFC & Wi-Fi 6

Google Pixel Watch 3 XL 2 scaled

Google‘s Pixel Watch 3 stopped through the FCC ahead of the August 13 launch. The American regulatory body certified the watch with four different model numbers, likely two each for the 41mm and 45mm size variants. The listing revealed their connectivity specs.

Pixel Watch 3 receives FCC approval ahead of launch

The FCC certified the Pixel Watch 3 with the model numbers GBDU9, GRY0E, GG3HH, and GGE4J. Well, the listing doesn’t specify that these model numbers are for the upcoming watch, but there are enough hints. The former two feature LTE connectivity, while the latter two don’t—have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity options. One model number from each group should belong to the 41mm variant, with the other two being the identifiers for the 45mm variant.

The accompanying documents reveal that the watch boasts Bluetooth 5, NFC, GPS, Wi-Fi 6 (2.4GHz and 5GHz), and UWB (Ultra Wideband) connectivity options. The latter two are an upgrade over last year’s Pixel Watch 2. The 2023 model features Wi-Fi b/g/n (2.4GHz) and lacks UWB. This upgrade should allow for a more stable and faster Wi-Fi connection. UWB, meanwhile, will improve the Watch Unlock feature. It lets you unlock your compatible Pixel phone with your watch.

Like in the past, the new Pixel Watch shares the same antenna for Bluetooth and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. As such, these two connectivity methods cannot transmit simultaneously. However, the addition of Wi-Fi 6 means the new model can transmit wireless signals via a second 5GHz Wi-Fi band. Google has certainly focused on functional improvements this year. The aesthetics remain unchanged as leaked Pixel Watch 3 renders show an identical device to the Pixel Watch 2.

Last year, the FCC certification spilled the beans on Google’s official watch straps for the Pixel Watch 2. That isn’t the case this time around. The agency didn’t name the straps. However, it tested the GBDU9 and GG3HH with a total of eight straps, while the GGE4J and GRY0E were tested with only five straps. Maybe one of the size variants will get fewer official straps than the other. We shall find out soon, as the new watch goes official in just over a month.

Google is expanding its Pixel lineup this year

The Pixel Watch 3 will be Google’s first smartwatch to come in two sizes. And it isn’t the only product category getting an additional model. The Pixel 9 series will also include a third model. Alongside the regular Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, we are expecting a Pixel 9 Pro XL. The company has already announced that its next batch of Pixel products, including the Pixel Fold lineup, will arrive on August 13. Stay tuned for more leaks and rumors in the build-up to the launch.
