Planned Igbo Must Go Protest in Lagos- Sanwo Olu Begs Protesters
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to the #EndBadGovernance protesters to conclude their ongoing demonstrations. Speaking through the state Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, at Ojota Park, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the protesters’ concerns and assured them that their voices had been heard.
“For our people protesting, we have heard their rights, we have heard their say. Sanwo-Olu, the governor, has said he has heard them. Now it is time to go home, now it is time to end their protest,” Omotosho conveyed.
The governor’s plea comes amidst nationwide demonstrations against bad governance, economic hardship, and other pressing issues. The protests have garnered significant attention, with citizens demanding better governance and reforms.
Sanwo-Olu Condemns Anti-Igbo Post and Orders Investigation
In a separate development, Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned a controversial post made by the account @Lagospedia on X (formerly Twitter), which called for the Igbo to leave Lagos and the South-West. ..., dated July 27, 2024, announced a planned #IgboMustGo protest from August 20 to 30, 2024, and has sparked widespread controversy on social media.
The governor’s media aide, Gboyega Akosile, issued a statement distancing both Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Government from the “reckless, divisive and dangerous rhetoric.” The statement emphasized that Lagos remains a home for all Nigerian citizens, irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu views ... as not only reckless and divisive but also an attempt to sow a seed of discord between the Yoruba in the South-West and other tribes, especially those who have made Lagos their permanent place of abode,” Akosile noted.
Sanwo-Olu appealed to Lagosians to disregard the inflammatory post and any similar messages. He urged security agencies to promptly investigate those behind the account and bring them to justice. The governor reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and harmony in the state, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
