Two people were killed in an attack blamed on the Berom militia in Plateau State, while security operatives rescued two suspects from an angry mob preparing to lynch them.

The suspects, who residents apprehended after the attack, were reportedly being threatened with death before troops and other security personnel intervened.

The incident happened at about 9 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Ta Hoss Community in Riyom Local Government Area of the state.

Troops of Sector 6, Operation ENDURING PEACE, moved into the community after receiving information about the attack. On arrival, they found the bodies of the two victims at the scene.

Residents had also detained two natives of Mere Community whom they suspected of involvement in the killings. Tension reportedly rose as an agitated crowd threatened to take the law into its own hands.

However, troops, supported by personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Mobile Police, intervened before the suspects could be lynched.

The Chairman of the Berom Youth Movement, the Gwom of Ta Hoss and several clergymen also appealed to the crowd to remain calm and avoid further violence.

Following the intervention, the two suspects were handed over to the DSS for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Meanwhile, security personnel have maintained a presence in the area to prevent reprisals and contain any further escalation of tension in the community.
