PlayStation Plus December Lineup Revealed: Skate Story To Make A Splash On Day One

PlayStation Plus has been hit-or-miss in recent years. While some of the freebies and Game Catalog entries (Sony’s equivalent of Game Pass) have been incredible, the service has always struggled to deliver a steady stream of both AAA and indie releases.

Thankfully, Sony has confirmed the first game hitting the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog in December on their blog, and it’s a doozy. As a high-profile indie that’s also a day-one PlayStation Plus release, it’ll heat up the typically cold December schedule.

PlayStation Plus’ First Free Game For December Confirmed

Skate Story Is Incoming

According to Sony, the first game coming to PS Plus in December through the Game Catalog is the upcoming Skate Story. While it may have “skate” in the name, this isn’t just a standard skating game. You play as a demon of the Underworld, tasked by the Devil to eat the moon to regain your freedom. You’ll traverse the Emptylands on a skateboard while learning new tricks and techniques, all in service of your gargantuan task.

It’s a very cool premise, the idea of learning standard tricks while you skate through nine layers of the Underworld is enough to get me interested on day one. That works out perfectly, since Skate Story will be a day-one PlayStation Plus entry when it launches on the Game Catalog on December 8.

As a reminder, you need to be a PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium member to gain access to the Game Catalog. If you don’t own a PlayStation 5 or have an appropriate Plus subscription, you can still grab Skate Story on PC or Switch 2.

Skate Story Looks Like An Instant Classic

It Has A Striking Visual Style

Skate Story Space

Folks in the indie game scene have been talking about Skate Story for months, and now it’s just a few weeks away. The “psychedelic soundtrack” from New York Artist Blood Cultures is the cherry on top, and is sure to add a lot more style to this already stunning-looking game. Over 70 tricks to master, customization elements, and even boss fights should help make this more than just a fleeting afternoon game, too.

December isn’t always a great month for game services and subscriptions, but PlayStation Plus will be ending the year with a bang. Skate Story has the chance to become an instant classic, especially with the premise and visual style alone. Along with Metroid Prime 4 and a few other stragglers, 2025 should end nicely for gaming.
