Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end the conflict in West Asia, expressing hope that the agreement would help restore peace and stability in the region.

He welcomed the
breakthrough between Washington and Tehran and said that India supported efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

The PM also stressed the importance of ensuring the freedom of navigation and commerce- that has come under focus amid concerns over disruptions to maritime shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia,” PM Modi said.

The PM also expressed hope that discussions on unresolved issues would lead to a sustainable and comprehensive final agreement between the two sides.

US, Iran finalise deal to end war

Earlier in the day, the US and Iran announced that a deal had been reached to end the war between the two nations.

The agreement, expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19, seeks to halt military operations across several fronts while paving the way for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and other unresolved issues.

Announcing the deal on his social media platform Truth Social, US President Donald Trump wrote, ““Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow.”

“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorise the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorise the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” the US President said.

‘Trump’s deal does not bind us,’ says Israel

Despite the deal announcement, uncertainty remained over the possibility of renewed conflict in the region, as
Israel rejected the US-Iran peace deal.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said that any deal between the US and Iran would not be binding on Israel and would not limit its security decisions.

“Trump’s agreement does not bind us. Israel is not subject to the United States, and we are an independent and sovereign nation,” he said.
