The incident occurred in Ikpe community, Ikpoba-Okha local government area of Edo state, where the woman’s body was later found.

In a statement on Tuesday, Eno Ikoedem, Edo police public relations officer, confirmed that the deceased’s lifeless body was discovered by the roadside near a river on January 10, 2026.

Ikoedem said officers from the Idogbo Police Division responded to a distress call and took the body to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead before being deposited at the mortuary.

She explained that preliminary findings showed the deceased, who lived in the Upper Sakponba area of Benin City, was in a romantic relationship with the suspect.

The police spokesperson said the suspect allegedly dumped the body near a river in Ikpe community and subsequently went into hiding.

She added that the suspect later contacted the family of the deceased and claimed he had not seen her for several days.
