THE Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, following accusations of assault on a Bolt driver in Abuja.
The police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed Ikwechegh is currently at Maitama Police Station for questioning.
This incident occurred after Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya filed a report with the police, detailing an altercation that reportedly unfolded when he attempted to deliver an order of snails to Ikwechegh’s residence on behalf of a vendor.
According to the driver, a dispute escalated when he asked the lawmaker for payment upon arrival at his compound.
A video circulating on social media appears to capture the confrontation, showing a visibly angered Ikwechegh slapping Abuwatseya while voicing threats.
The footage shows Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), venting his frustrations over the driver’s perceived “disrespect” during the delivery.
He is heard berating the driver and, at one point, allegedly threatening to “make this man disappear.”
As the video continues, Abuwatseya, seemingly maintaining his composure, asks, “Are you slapping me, sir?” to which the lawmaker responds, “I just did. Slap me back. How dare you?”
Ikwechegh goes on to dismissively challenge any repercussions, stating, “My name is Honourable Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh…Call the Inspector General of Police, let him come.”
Public Backlash Mounts
The video’s release has sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria, with many citizens and online voices demanding justice.
Calls for accountability have been vocal, highlighting concerns over abuse of power and the importance of treating every Nigerian, regardless of occupation or social standing, with respect.
In a statement issued today, the FCT Police Command acknowledged the lawmaker’s remarks that appeared to slight the office of the Inspector General of Police, calling them “dismissive” and a “troubling disregard” for law enforcement authority.
Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has ordered a comprehensive investigation, assuring the public that the case will be handled impartially and that appropriate legal action will follow.
International Echoes
This incident parallels a recent case in the United Kingdom, where British Labour MP Mike Amesbury was suspended after a video appeared to show him punching a man to the ground.
The Labour Party swiftly suspended Amesbury, pending investigation—a move that has drawn attention from Nigerian commentators advocating for similar measures within their own legislature.
As the investigation continues, Nigerians wait to see whether the nation’s legal and political systems will deliver accountability in this high-profile case.
