Police arrest suspected kidnappers in Ile-Ife

The Osun Police Command on Tuesday, said it arrested two suspected kidnappers in Ile-Ife, after a gun duel.

SP Yemisi Opalola, the command’s spokesperson made this known in a statement, adding that the suspects were arrested after kidnapping a man at a Fulani settlement in Ile-Ife.

“The Osun Police Command in its struggle not to make the state a safe haven for criminal elements to hibernate; have arrested two suspected kidnappers.

“The fact of the case is that, on Sunday, at about 11:30a.m, a complainant made a report at ‘C’ Division, Aganhun, Ile-Ife that some suspected kidnappers came to Fulani settlement, Erefe Area, Ondo Road, Ile-Ife at about 12:15a.m and kidnapped one Muhammed Gembu.

“Immediately the police received the report, detectives swung into action and arrested two suspects, after a gun duel, with one of them fatally wounded and another escaping.

“The kidnapped victim was however, rescued unhurt with the assistance of Fulani vigilante in the community,” Opalola explained.

She said the arrested suspects would be charged to court after conclusion of investigation.

Opalola said the state Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, urges members of the public to always cooperate and give timely information that will assist the police to nip in the bud, any criminal act.

Scores of farmers killed as terrorists invade Borno community

Many farmers have been killed in Rann, Kala-Balge LGA of Borno State by terrorists who invaded their farms.

The terrorists were said to have arrived the community on motorcycles and attacked the residents with guns and machetes.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, insurgents loyal to a Boko Haram faction were responsible for the attack.

A source in the community was reported to have said some of the farmers were tied up before they were killed.

The victims are also said to have been buried on Monday, while several persons are reported to still be missing, TheCable reported.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach Sani Mohammed, Borno police spokesman, were not successful as he didn’t respond to calls or messages when contacted by the medium.

The attack comes days after insurgents invaded the Chibok community in Borno state.

On May 3, Kautukari, a community in Chibok LGA of Borno state, was attacked by suspected fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

2023: Victor Adoji wins PDP senate ticket for Kogi East

Dr Victor Alewo Adoji (DVAA), the erudite banker-turned politician, on Monday emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Kogi East Senatorial District for the 2023 general election.

Adoji polled 117 to defeat Engr. Aminu Suleiman, Elder Ubolo Okpanachi and Isaac Alfa, a former Chief of Air Staff and senator, and who scored 54, 43 and 20 respectively.

The PDP chieftain who contested the senatorial election during the last 2019 general elections is a grassroot politician who has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Igala Kingdom (Kogi State) in several areas, especially around education, empowerment, health care delivery and physical development.

Mr Adoji, in an interview with journalists, thanked the party’s delegates for their overwhelming support and confidence they had in him.

He said the victory was the beginning of a new dawn in Kogi, particularly the Kogi East while expressing confidence for victory in the general election.

The silent philanthropist extraordinaire assured Kogi East people that his presence in the National Assembly would impact the generality of the state in areas of economy, security and infrastructural development.

The election was peaceful and monitored by a team of joint security agents, the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the media.
