Two persons, including a serving police officer and a female passenger, were confirmed dead on Tuesday after a 40-foot container truck toppled onto a commercial tricycle at the Ijora Causeway, Lagos.
The incident, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), occurred when the truck, marked XP 368 AKD, lost control while attempting a dangerous manoeuvre under the Ijora Bridge.
The tricycle, marked KJA 364 QN, was crushed in the process.
The LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who confirmed the development in a statement, said the crash claimed two lives instantly.
“Two passengers, including a serving police officer, died instantly,” he said.
Naijaonpoint learnt that the officer’s remains were moved to a mortuary in Yaba, while relatives of the female victim rushed to the scene to recover her body.
Bakare-Oki added that two others, including the tricycle driver, were rescued alive but sustained severe bilateral leg fractures.
They were rushed to Jimsan Hospital, Gasikiya, Ijora, by operatives of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
Security operatives from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri Police Divisions were deployed to prevent angry onlookers from setting the container truck ablaze. They also helped crowd-control efforts to ensure emergency responders could carry out the rescue operation safely.
The LASTMA boss commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured.
He praised the “swift response and professionalism” of emergency workers and security agencies, which, according to him, prevented further casualties.
Bakare-Oki urged truck drivers to adopt safe driving practices, especially when navigating bridges, intersections, and crowded routes.
“Extreme caution must be exercised to prevent avoidable tragedies such as this,” he warned.
