The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ruled that the killing was premeditated. Evidence revealed that on January 27, 2024, Kate visited a traditional healer in Soshanguve, prompting an argument with her husband when he discovered her whereabouts via a vehicle tracker.

Later that night, after returning home, an argument escalated, and Hlongwane allegedly used her service pistol to shoot Russel multiple times. He was rushed to Akasia Hospital but died from his injuries.

In court, Hlongwane claimed the firearm discharged accidentally, but ballistic experts proved the shots were fired from a distance, contradicting her story. The court noted she showed no remorse and highlighted the seriousness of domestic violence, particularly when committed by law enforcement officers.

Judge Papi Mosopa emphasized that the sentence serves as a warning that conflicts must be resolved peacefully and lawfully.
