A huge police investigation was under way in Germany after a “suspected explosive device” was found in southern Germany. The device was found on the tracks at the entrance to Treuchtlingen railway station, south of Nuremberg.

Rail traffic was brought to a standstill as train services were suspended and police urged people to avoid the area. Specialists X-rayed the suspected device but could not rule out whether it contained explosives, police said.

Middle Franconia Police said: “The suspicion of an object suspected to contain explosives could not be dispelled so far. Further investigations by the special forces are required.”

The force added: “Currently, as a precautionary measure, some directly affected buildings are being evacuated by emergency response teams.”

A specialist robot was being used to lift the device to “enable further investigations”, and cordons remained in place. Several rail operators have been affected, and long-distance trains were being rerouted to avoid the area.
