The Nigeria Police Force has trained 192 officers across the country on the use of the Athena Forensic Intelligence Solution (AFIS) in its push against cybercrime.
Naijaonpoint reports that the training, which ran from July 9 to August 15, 2025, was conducted in partnership with Radio Tactics Group Limited and included officers from all 36 state commands, the Federal Capital Territory, and 10 specialized units.
According to the Force, the programme was designed to strengthen digital and forensic skills for improved investigations.
Officers were trained on identifying threats, retrieving and processing data from SIM cards, GPS devices, satellite phones, and different mobile devices.
They were also equipped with skills in biometric capture and the use of forensic hotlists to connect intelligence records with operational data.
While strengthening its fight against cybercrime, the Police also announced the arrest of three suspects.
Gbenga Samuel, Dele Titus, and Olalekan Oke were apprehended in Abuja and Lagos for cyberstalking, identity theft, and online fraud.
Investigations revealed that on July 18, 2025, the suspects hacked a WhatsApp account, contacted the owner, and demanded ₦3 million to avoid exposing sensitive information.
Forensic analysis traced the activities back to them, leading to their arrest and the recovery of the hacked account.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed that the Force will continue to adopt digital approaches and improve training for officers to meet global standards in tackling cybercrime.
