The recent efforts by th3 Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to review and harmonise police scheme of service and conditions of service have been described as “cosmetic reforms”.
This assertion was made by the “Revolutionary” Movement led by Omoyele Sowore in a email on Tuesday.
Recall that Sowore led #PoliceProtest of officers recently.
Sowore’s statement said, “Following the historic #PoliceProtest that shook the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and drew national attention to the plight of both serving and retired police officers, the … Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has hurriedly inaugurated a committee to “review and harmonise” the Police Scheme of Service and Conditions of Service.
“This sudden move on August 11, 2025, is not the product of foresight or genuine care for police welfare it is the product of pressure. Without the loud and courageous stand of police retirees, serving officers, and Nigerian citizens on July 21st, there would be no such committee today.
Continuing, the statement said, “For decades, police welfare has been neglected. Stagnant promotions, miserable retirement benefits, poor living conditions, and the absence of proper post-service support have been the reality for those who serve. The IGP and his handlers ignored these cries until the protest exposed them.
“Now, they hope to calm the storm with a two-week “review committee” chaired by AIG Nemi Iwo. But history teaches us that such committees too often end up as public relations stunts — long on promises, short on delivery.
“The revolutionary movement is not fooled. We demand:
“Immediate implementation of fair promotions and rank harmonisation.
“Payment of all outstanding retirement benefits to police retirees.
“Comprehensive overhaul of police welfare structures, backed by law and guaranteed funding.
“A transparent process, not an internal cover-up, in reform deliberations.
“We will continue to mobilise and will hold the Force leadership accountable until genuine, verifiable reforms are implemented not just announced.
