Businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his wife, Tsakani Matlala, are in police custody over allegations of planning an attempted hit on Matlala’s ex-girlfriend, TV personality Tebogo Thobejane.
The arrests were revealed during a bail hearing at Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Tsakani was arrested Thursday night, and both she and her husband will remain detained until their next court appearance on Tuesday, June 3.
The charges stem from an October 2023 incident when gunmen opened fire on Thobejane’s car in Sandton. Although Thobejane was unharmed, her companion was seriously injured and required extended hospitalization.
The Matlalas appeared in court with two co-accused: Musa Kekana (35) and Tiego Floyd Mabusela (43).
The court granted a request from defence lawyers to ban media photography during the proceedings. Vusi Matlala has offered to surrender his travel documents as part of a possible bail deal.
Prosecutors said the suspected hitmen will appear separately in the Johannesburg High Court on July 11, with the case expected to be lengthy due to its complexity.
