Putin calls Trump on 80th birthday, discusses Iran deal and Ukraine war

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday spoke with US President Donald Trump on the latter’s 80th birthday, with the two leaders discussing the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, as well as possible future contacts between Washington and Moscow, according to Kremlin.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said that the conversation lasted around 55 minutes and was described as friendly and frank. Putin extended birthday wishes to Trump, while the US President conveyed greetings from First Lady Melania Trump.

The leaders discussed the memorandum of understanding currently being negotiated between the US and Iran. Ushakov said Trump told Putin that an agreement was close and that the outcome of the talks could be announced soon, despite Iran continuing to deny that a deal is imminent.

“The conversation focused on the situation surrounding the memorandum of understanding being drafted between the United States and Iran. Donald Trump said an agreement is close,” Ushakov told reporters.

The two leaders also discussed the war in Ukraine. Trump stressed the need to bring military action to an end, while Putin argued that recent Ukrainian strikes on civilian targets inside Russia were complicating efforts to reach a settlement.

According to Ushakov, Trump said he was prepared to use his influence with both European countries and Kyiv to help advance a peace settlement.

The Kremlin aide added that it was agreed that US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are closely involved in Iranian affairs, would travel to Russia in the near future for further discussions.

“It has been agreed that US presidential special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are currently closely involved in Iranian affairs, will return to Russia soon,” Ushakov said.
