Quad unity: US envoy Sergio Gor says India, Australia, Japan aligned on free and open Indo-Pacific

Highlighting the growing alignment among the four Quad countries, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said India, the United States, Japan and Australia are working towards closer cooperation and concrete outcomes to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific.

“Together with India, our four nations are aligned in advancing closer collaboration and delivering results for a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Gor said in a post on X, referring to the Quad grouping of India, the US, Japan and Australia.

Gor’s remarks come as the four countries continue to expand practical cooperation across security and economic areas, with the Quad increasingly focused on translating its strategic vision into concrete initiatives.

At their latest foreign ministers’ meeting in Manila on July 22, the four countries reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and agreed to advance cooperation in maritime and transnational security, economic prosperity and security, critical and emerging technologies, and humanitarian assistance and emergency response.

The focus on tangible cooperation comes as the four countries seek to strengthen resilience across strategically important sectors while supporting regional stability.

The Quad’s agenda has also increasingly expanded beyond traditional security concerns. Critical and emerging technologies, supply-chain resilience, economic security and maritime cooperation have become important areas of collaboration.

India-US ties remain key to Quad agenda

Gor’s comments also come days after US Vice President JD Vance spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss ways to strengthen the India-US strategic partnership.

During the conversation, the two leaders discussed cooperation in areas including trade, defence, critical and emerging technologies, energy security and critical minerals, highlighting the breadth of the bilateral relationship.

India’s role remains particularly significant for the Quad because of its geographic position in the Indian Ocean and its expanding strategic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
