Vice President Kashim Shettima’s recent recognition of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano has sparked widespread reactions on social media.
According yoShettima, in posts on his official Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accounts, referred to Sanusi as the 16th Emir, a move that many online users interpreted as an endorsement of Sanusi’s legitimacy to the throne.
The recognition comes amid ongoing legal tussles over the Kano Emirate, with the state grappling with two claimants to the revered position—Sanusi and Aminu Ado Bayero, who is recognized as the 15th Emir.

However, after some pockets of reactions by social media users, the third paragraph in ... was later edited, omitting the emir’s name.
