The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Monday warned the Federal Government that it would resume a total, indefinite, and comprehensive strike if agreed-upon demands are not fully implemented within a four-week period.
This announcement was contained in a communique issued at the end of NARD’s Extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, signed by its President, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman; Secretary-General, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Ibrahim.
The association had suspended its nationwide indefinite strike just two days prior, on Saturday, after 29 days of industrial action, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
That MoU committed the government to fulfilling NARD’s demands within the four-week timeframe, which now serves as the deadline for the ultimatum.
The communique stated: “The strike is suspended for four weeks to allow monitoring of implementation. Failure to fully implement agreements will result in the resumption of a total, indefinite, and comprehensive strike.”
The NEC reviewed the progress made on various agreements, noting that while some processes are underway, full implementation must be secured by the deadline.
The NEC resolved that the following outstanding issues must be completed immediately:
- The five disengaged FTH Lokoja doctors must be fully reinstated within two weeks.
- Arrears (CONMESS, Accoutrement, Specialist Allowance, Promotion), and outstanding salaries for affected hospitals must be compiled, transmitted, and paid within one month.
- The CBA exercise must resume and be completed on time.
- All remaining agreements from conciliatory meetings must be implemented immediately.
The association emphasized that the strike has been suspended for four weeks to allow monitoring, but failure to comply will trigger a total, indefinite, and comprehensive strike.
It added that State Teaching Hospitals and Federal Health Institutions with unresolved local issues should continue industrial action until genuine commitments are secured.
